Terraform Cities

  • Terraform Cities is a nonprofit and conceptual project on a mission to transform cities into thriving, green ecosystems that support the well-being of people and the planet by integrating abundant flora into the built environment. Through education, advocacy, innovation, and collaborative partnerships, they aim to radically reimagine the urban landscape.

  • Terraform Cities needed a compelling identity with which to promote its mission and secure community support and, ultimately, fundraising. In addition to their identity, I developed a landing page website and a brand white paper.

The foundation of the Terraform Cities identity system is the grid. It was used first to create the wordmark, but is also an essential element of the visual system, acting as a way to highlight the contrast between hard and soft, city and nature. I was influenced by images of eco-architecture—large buildings with living walls or lush balconies on every floor—and the unique patterns created when concrete and flora live in concert with each other.

The system merges together the past and the future. Inspiration from vintage graph paper and 90s representations of ‘the future’ (The Fifth Element) give the identity warmth, but the underlying grid system is very much linked with modern digital design and technology.
